Title: Origin of the Nativity?
Post by: Aindriú on December 18, 2011, 11:42:38 AM
Does anyone know how the narrative of the nativity was recorded?

That is, the majority of the Gospels contain works performed by a matured Jesus Christ. However, a similar collection of third party witnesses weren't privy to events from the Annunciation to the birth of Christ. So, from whom was the narrative collected from?

The Virgin Mary was a witness and participant in all these matters and was at the heart of the Christian community. The brethren of the Lord were also members of the early Christian community.

That's true. I had been thinking there must be someone else who could acknowledge her story. Though, on further reflection, I supposed if we believe who we say Jesus is, then we should be able to accept his mother, as well.

Why must there be someone else? There was, in any case, our Lord himself, and the shepherds, and all manner of others who remembered the events. Elisabeth for a while. John the Baptist himself. The family of the Lord.

That's true. Thank you, Father.

Plus a couple handmaidens were there during the birth.
I would guess some around Bethlehem may have heard some things and inquired about it.

St. James would have almost certainly known how Christ was born (though not necessarily the story of His conception) and about how and why they fled to Egypt.

Aindriú, the way I've always looked at these kinds of questions is a statement: "Either Jesus is God as he says, or a liar". Since I believe he is God..........
