Title: Where did our Protestants go?
Post by: Tikhon.of.Colorado on July 14, 2011, 02:11:05 PM
I've noticed that, over the last few months, a few posters whom I enjoyed reading arguments from such as...I think a couple names were hopefulconvert and Alfredperrson.

forgive me if they are incorrectly spelled.

What's happened to them?  Are any of you still lurking?

Well there are some who post at various times who are not argumentative I believe the names "Keble", "Ebor" & a couple others (another person for sure, i cannot recall by name, sorry) are actually those one can have a constructive conversation with (kind of like in a C.S. Lewis mode).

Where did our Protestants go?

A better question is, Do you want to see them again? It will only require a small sum of money, but only unmarked bills please. (Insert evil laughter.)

My ears (typing fingers?) must have been burning, as my grandmother would have said.  I come to see how things are and find myself mentioned.    :)  I'm glad that you think I'm not argumentative.  I'm sure that others might think that I have been in some of the threads where I don't agree with them and keep offering countering information.  :D

LOL!  Lucky for me there is no "brown screen sydrome" here since I was *not* taking a sip of coffee as I read this.

Only a "small sum"?  Should I feel "cheap"?   ;)

If you meant someone like me, I've just been busy with Life, Family, Children (two teens and a pre-teen, with the eldest getting ready to go to college) a double class with lab for me in the spring semester, work and so forth.

Anglican ninjas... hmmm   I'm trying to work my mind around that idea, but I keep getting the Neko-ninja from "Usagi Yojimbo" in the mix (along with the pumas and jaguars)...  This could be odd.... but decently and in order.   ;) ;D

There is still a Church of Sweden?

I'm not trying to be funny or insulting, but I'm surprised.  I've met lots and lots of Scandanavians, and I have yet to meet one who didn't think Christianity was totally irrelevant.  Welcome!

There is even a recent Norwegian horror film about trolls that comments on this situation:

If someone dies during their catechumenate they get an Orthodox burial. Sound Orthodox to me :)

This is more of a reference to a thread in another part of the site where several catechumen refused to self-identify as Orthodox. I think there's good reason for the prayers for the making of a catechumen to be said months before their reception rather than right before.

Most (about 70% I think) of the Swedish population belongs to the Church of Sweden. However, quite few are regular churchgoers and mainly use the church for things like baptism, marriage and burial services. Or in a crisis of life.

Of that percentage, how many would you say are serious about their Faith?  This is very interesting, since I was not aware that even that many Swedes were still self-identifying as Christians.  Again, this is coming from someone who generally ran into Swedes on holiday either here in LA or in Greece, so I know my experience can hardly be considered basis for an informed opinion.

I don't think you have to self-identify as Christian to be counted a member. At least in Denmark, people are automatically considered members of the Church of Denmark unless they specifically request not to be.

It is true. But if we must look at those who are seroius about their faith it would probably lie in between 5 and 10%

Actually people born in Sweden have not become members of the Church of Sweden since.. Quite some time I guess. Muslim and jewish born children have not been taken into the church as members. And during the 19th century it was made possible to join another christian group. The children of those people after a while have counted as not members of the CoS.
Nowadays you have to specificially join and if you are going to be baptised you can be a member of the Church.

I have no idea how to draw the line on where people are serious or unserious about their faith in any objective way. But my feelings would tell me that about 10-15 % of swedish people are serious about their faith. In those numbers I include christians of other denominations.

IIRC all the national Lutheran church of Sweden disestablished in the 90's. Since then Swedes aren't automaticaly considered members at birth, and the relationship between the CofS and the Swdeish crown was abolished, even though the Bernadottes remain members.

The ruling king/queen have to, according to law, still be a member of the Church of Sweden
It was possible for children even before the state and church split in 2000 to not be born into the CoS.
But the exact rules have shifted and become less and less CoS-centered.

The split however is not complete. There is still a law that governs some of the basic aspects of the CoS: Lag om Svenska Kyrkan: http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lag_om_Svenska_kyrkan

The CoS also have certain privileges, such as that the state takes care of the memberfee through the taxes and that it is responsible for burials and burial places.

^Last time I checked secular(ist) Europe has public holidays such as Easter Monday, Pentecost Monday, Ascension, Assumption/Dormition, second day of Christmas etc, while the supposedly devout Christian USA has never had them.  It's funny, but on a cultural/public level Christianity is way more visible in any European country than America. Cultural Calvinism if it were to disappear, wouldn't be a loss at all.

One of my friends pointed this out: English comedy is full of biblical and religious references Americans don't get, yet roughly 1/3 to nearly 1/2 of Englishmen are atheists (statistics vary greatly).  As he put it, the English have all the Christian formation but none of the belief, while Americans have no formation and all of the belief.

One also may consider the historical roots of America, where the early settlers came from religious sects that did not recognize any religious calendar.  Even Christmas was suppressed in some areas until the late 19th century, when there was an explosion of Catholic immigration.
