I recall reading that one Finnish Gospel musician once said that "when you combine religion and entertaiment you get bad religion and bad entertaiment."

That's true of every "worship band" performance I've ever sat through. Usually not done very well. And I get freaked out by people (especially little kids) who become completely enraptured and gesticulate and cry.

For some reason it makes me think of an episode I saw of Metalocalypse where they had the band's parents on the show. Toki's dad was a pastor from Norway and about halfway through the episode it show's Toki's mom cross herself from right to left.

I suppose spiritually it's better than nothing, but I'm glad my Lutheran Grandmother isn't alive to see this.

I will say that I was expecting this to be way cooler, as Scandinavia has produced some of the best extreme metal that the world has seen. I just figured that there had to be some High Church Lutherans up there that could successfully marry the worlds. This seems silly.

A Lutheran death metal service isn't all that shocking.  The Scandinavians are the undisputed masters of the death-metal genre.

It's a set-up.  During the winter the sun rises at 9 am and sets at 3 or 4 pm in Stockholm.  No wonder why seasonal affective disorder and depression are common among Scandinavians.  There ain't no sunlight for vitamin metabolism and serotonin production!

Ay Dios mio! That's... :o

I actually LIKE metal and I think that this is ridiculous. Not to get stereotypical, but I totally thought that Lutherans would be the last people to have a metal service.  ;D

But I agree with jordanz that if any country is going to do a Lutheran metal service....it's a Scandinavian country!

If they could get the guys from Emperor or Burzum to convert to Christianity, a decent metal mass might be feasible.

I know. You would think that with such great metal acts which Finland has produced over the years (CoB, Kalmah, Nightwish) there would be something a little more artistic and palpable.  Such is clearly not the case.

In Poland it is the same thing.
If the Swedes lived the Faith, they would not have these problems. The only remedy is to eat less. Do you know how idiotic women who believe the fact that their metabolism doesn't work go to the solarium, and walk out with brown skin..
I have noticed one thing, you can invent a disease, and soon, everyone will be sick with it.

No, it's not. Poland is well to the south.

The winter blues of Scandinavians isn't some recently invented disease. It was noted by writers in antiquity.

No, Finns, though they look like Nords in almost every aspect have the same ancestors as the Mongols and Turks. Their language is part of the larger Turkish family.  Technically, Finland and Iceland have a  special designation to mark them apart from Scandinavia, but I can't remember what it is.

Scandinavia includes Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Nordic countries are Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

One reason Finland isn't Scandinavian because Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish languages are a dialect continuum known as the Scandinavian languages—they are mutually intelligible with each other. Finnish is entirely unrelated to Scandinavian languages.

Finland is kind of a hybrid between Russia and Scandinavia.

Finland a hybrid of Russia and Scandinavia?  Finland was conquered and ruled by both Scandinavians and Russians, quite brutally too. The Finns have a state Lutheran church and a state Orthodox Church, but culturally, Finland is quite distinct. Elakoon Suomi.

This reminds me of Fratello Metallo, an Italian metal band whose lead singer (vocalist) is a Capuchin Friar.

I believe he has since left the band because of his fame.

Source?

I consider Finland to be part of Scandinavia. While Finland is geographically a little distinct from other Scandinavian countries and while our language and culture might have originally been more Eastern than other Scandinavican countries I believe that centuries-long occupation of Sweden and post-Independence politics made us part of Scandinavia.

Linguistically-speaking, Finnish is not Scandinavian but Uralic, thereby related to Estonian, Hungarian, and various minority languages of Finland, Sweden, and Russia (Sami, Udmurt, Mari, etc). No clear genetic relationship has been established with the Turkic languages (sorry, Scamandrius), though the urheimat suggested by the name "Uralic" might cause some confusion in that regard (the Urals do run through parts of Kazakhstan and other areas where Turkic languages are spoken). Culturally of course it may be another, more complicated matter, as Alpo points out.

On to the topic at hand: I am so glad to be firmly on the path to joining a church where this kind of thing is not tolerated or encouraged. Call me crazy, but I really do think that there ought to be maintained in the minds and hearts of the people a strict division between what is allowed in a liturgical context and what is not. Luckily for me, Egyptians (and Syrians, Ethiopians, etc.) are generally not keen on heavy metal music, though theoretically it could be some other thing (I would be just as unhappy to find "Chaabi" showing up in church).

One would think that those who actually live in Scandinavia know better than those who live in America.

But then again since I'm not into Nationalism, Scandinavism or other isms for me it doesn't really matter whether we are part of Scandinavia or not. People should value their heritage in it's own right rather than it being part of something bigger. Länge leve Finland. ;)

This concept has also spread to Colombia: "Iglesia rockero en Bogota" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQsfU3kYbTs&feature=related) (grupo "PANTOKRATOR", because even the "metaleros Christianos" need the street cred that comes with misspelling things)

I can't see how they expect people to take Christianity seriously when doing this, sure people will come listen to it and be entertained, but will it really change their hearts? Then again, if it gets Europeans back in church, that can't be all bad.

Why didn't I see this thread two years ago!

Amon Amarth could probably make it sound good, but would have to turn their hammers upside down to look like Crosses.  They seemed to forget that there were Christian vikings...St. Olaf, Olaf Trygvasson, Harald Hardrada.

Then again, I don't like the idea of a metal liturgy.  It just feels weird to me.  Then again, much of Renaissance and Baroque church music would have been the popular styles of their day.  Perhaps it is a change in focus.  When Pretorius and Gabrielli wrote it was to glorify God and just so happened to also be entertaining.  Not entertainment first and foremost.

How quickly we forget the lessons of Manowar (http://youtu.be/O7q3qBQzeQc). Did they not show us the way?

The triune God made heavy metal, and He saw that it was good
He said to play it in order to avoid hell, and we promised that we would,
When demons say it's over with, you know that it's a lie
For God made heavy metal, and it's never gonna die!
