Title: Former Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem 'gets groceries by rope'
Post by: biro on January 07, 2011, 12:02:06 AM
Former Patriarch Irineos I of the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem still lives in that city. That is one of few ways his current mode of life resembles the old one.

From the article:
Quote
Six years ago, Irineos I was the patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem with about 100,000 followers. Today, he sits behind locked doors in his Old City apartment, claiming he has been imprisoned by the successor who ousted him in a dispute over sale of church land to Israelis.

The only way Irineos could speak to The Associated Press Thursday was through a wireless microphone hoisted at the end of a rope to his roof — in the same black shopping bag supporters use nightly to deliver him groceries.

? I'm shocked?  I don't understand why something like this would happen. Is this a common thing?

Deposed Patriarchs are not common enough to make the generalization, but Archb. Meletios was ordered confined to a monastery on some Greek isle when he was deposed by the bishops of Greece.  He decided instead to take (reportedly by bribes) the throne of Constantinople instead.

Former Patriarch Irineos I apparently sold Orthodox Church property to the Israeli government...

He was apparently deposed and reduced to being just a monk.

For selling land that wasn't his to sell, he should be cleaning Palestinian toilets!
