Title: Editing or modifying a post
Post by: Tallitot on February 21, 2010, 07:34:23 PM
Why is it that some post have a tab marked "modify" that allows you to edit your own post, and some don't?

For instance i was able to modify this post but when i tried to edit post #140 in this thread:
http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/topic,25631.msg410538/topicseen.html#msg410538
I couldn't.

I think there's a time limit on editing one's own posts. And the thread to which you linked is locked anyhow, so if you tried to edit it after it was locked, it would likely be impossible to do so.

I tried to edit before it was locked, about an hour after posting (ie after a cup of coffee and some reflection).

The time limit in the past has seemed to me to be less than an hour.

15 minutes, I believe.

Apparently you reflected too long.  ;)

The forum used to give quite some time to modify, but in the last 6 mos. or so, it's a rather short period of time.  Also, I think if someone else replies promptly, that eliminates the option to modify.

IIRC, we had an incident where someone went back and dried to delete all their posts they'd submitted over the course of several years. Which is why we have the time restrictions we currently do.

That doesn't really explain it being only 15 minutes.  :-\

Well, it might be nice if it were longer, but it's a lot more forgiving than some forums I've posted on (mostly from the hacker/open source community) that never allow anything to be edited or deleted once posted. Even spam will be moved to a special spam/trash forum, rather than being deleted.

When I joined the forum, one had 10 hours to modify posts (e.g. allowing people to "sleep" on a post before modifying).

My understanding is that people would open the modify post window and walk away - resulting in database issues; Hence, the change to 30 minutes to modify posts.
