:o  :o  :o Wow indeed...this is huge.  From what little I know of Metropolitan Jonah, he is a great human being.  Thrust into being the metropolitan so soon must be such a shock and a burden!  he needs our prayers and support.  What an historic occassion.  This must be the first time that a convert has ever been elected as metropolitan of the OCA or its previous incarnation, the Metropolia.  Eis polla eti despota!

Doesn't that make this the first primatial election of the OCA since the days of the Metropolia that the Synod actually selected the popular choice for Metropolitan?  Metropolitans Theodosius and Herman were both selected by the Synod even though neither received the needed majority of the popular vote.

"Eis polla..." is Greek.  It means "Many years, Master".  Everybody sings it in Greek, even Slavonic-speaking churches, IIRC.

What Orual says is true.  I know someone at the AAC and they are forwarding info to a friend of mine, and he told me that +Jonah had the majority of votes on both ballots, and I believe +Job fiinished a strong second on both.

Like Schultz, I'm listening to Metropolitan JONAH's remarks from yesterday.  I can imagine this had a strong influence on the voting.

I'm privileged to know him a little bit, having been to St. John's Monastery a few times while he was abbot.  As others have said here, a very worthy man for this very difficult job.

==========

I think,  overall, a good choice.  The man has actually BEEN a monk and LIVED in a monastery vs the vast majority of the North American hierarchs.  He is young and energetic.  From what I understand he actually lived with the homeless people in a shelter and is very modest.

I assume that he will have great allegience to Arbp Dmitri of Dallas, as he is singularly responsible for his elevation to the episcopacy.  I like the fact that he has lived in Russia and has had a chance to get exposed to Orthodox ethos.

Maybe we have another St Photius the Great in the making!

Yes, everyone I know who wanted his grace Job was torn, because while he would be an outstanding candidate, they didn't want to wish the job on him.  Many years in his greatly earned retirement (earned in the sense that he deserves a rest from the good fight).

That, and it seems pretty clear to me that Bishop Job, at his age, would be little more than a short-term placeholder while Syosset grooms a younger candidate to be elected in just a few years.  It's good that the AAC decided to select a relatively young bishop for the office now, someone who'll be able to rudder the ship for many years to come.

Abp. Job is too young to retire - he's only 62!  He just needs to relax and get back into the swing of things....maybe take a few weeks off to visit a monastery or something.  I heard that he was actually physically sick recently about the tought of becoming Metropolitan.

His grace was telling a story one time how someone remarked how well he looked for his age.  When he told him what his age really was, they took the compliment back.

He might be young, but he has earned his name.  I converted in the same parish he did, know a number of people from his tenure in New England, and I went to his cathedral in Chicago for a while.  I know he has been through a lot.

If I were in Met. JONAH's shoes I'd look for a replacement for his see right away and let JOB retire in peace.  Electing Abp. Job as metropolitan would have made sense, but he wants to retire very badly and that would have made him a bad choice.  The last thing the OCA needed was someone in the big chair who would have been dying to leave it.

I would think that getting bishops to head the existing vacant see's, along with where he started (southeast) where the bishop is 23 YEARS OLDER would be a bigger priority.

Well yeeeah, that too... I'm just saying helping JOB retire is one of those things that I hope is on Metropolitan JONAH's "to do" list.  Abp. JOB is probably feeling a lot like a kid in school when it's five minutes to the dismissal bell.  I'm just saying it would be nice if he could be let out a little early.

Archbishop Job is a convert? What was his original church and when did he convert?

Besides the clergy, bishops and monsatics, what lay people get to cast a vote in the OCA Election of a Primate?

p.s. could someone please tell me what "Eis polla eti, Despota!"  means.  I can get the last word, but nothing else.  Thanks!

"Many years, Master!"

Thank you!

My understanding is that each parish has 2 delegates who can vote.  One is the parish priest and the other is a lay delegate.  Usually, the lay delegate is the parish President.

The OCA link talks about this... he is a convert from Episcopal church in the late 70's, during his college years.

Apparently, the number of delegates accorded a parish depends on the number of priests that are assigned to that particular parish.  If your parish has one priest, you are allowed that priest as a delegate plus one lay delegate.  If your parish has two assigned priests, you are allowed those priests plus two lay delegates, etc.

And for the purposes of counting these parish representatives, Syosset doesn't consider deacons as clergy, so a parish can send its deacon as a lay delegate, which my parish did.

Hearing our new Metropolitan speak, I am for the first time in a long time filled with true hope for the future of the OCA.  I know it won't be easy to right the ship, but I feel we now have a leader capable of guiding us as we attempt to do so.  AXIOS!

The Vatican's: his mother was Eastern rite, and I believe his father Latin.  His father disowned him when he converted.  When he used to visit, someone in the parish would contact his mother so they could meet.  His father was reconciled with him some time after he became bishop of Chicago, before his father's death.

that's interesting because on the OCA website said he was baptized Episcopalian.  He also talked about having grown up an Episcopalian in his speech on the "Vision for the Future" I heard over at AFR.

Tangent on why the OCA doesn't have a patriarch moved to Faith Issues (http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/board,3.0.html) and merged into this thread:  USA territory (http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/topic,17288.msg269371.html#msg269371)

Isn't that the parish who just lost their priest, Fr. Stephen Karaffa (memory eternal!)?  He passed away while attending the AAC.

Yes, it is one and the same - may Fr. Stephen's memory be eternal.
