I can't be sure, but it looks like Christ blessing and Mary showing the Lord to the natives of Alaska. I could be wrong, but it's fiesable.

They look more like Russian soldiers.

The inscription in the lower border is very difficult to read on the screen I'm looking at right now, but at the moment it appears that there is a date of either 1904 or 1914, and mention of the appearance of the Mother of God to Russian soldiers.
Once I can look at this image on a better screen, I might be able to say more.

Funny, because there are no firearms except for two in the background of that photo (oh, and they aren't really recognizable as firearms)... You fail once again my friend...
I am not the only one that sees the guns.
Forgive, brother John

Dear in-Christ list! I'll have the formal name of the icon for you shortly, as soon as I get a telephone call back. To cut through the nonsense, both icons are from the same podlinnik (or prototype). They do indeed depict Russian soldiers wearing World War I uniforms, and there are firearms present. It's a shame the inscrption line on either is not readable (at least on my monitor), because I would be happy to translate the inscription for you. I'm assuming that the inscription will say something like Manifestation of the Mother of God to . . . . on . . . . at . . . because that's the standard format.
I'm new to this list, but I am a scholar of icons, and happy to offer whatever meager insight I can provide.
In Christ, Vladimir Saemmler-Hindrichs

I do not know what event may be commemorated in the icon, but this is some anecdotal information that might help others who are viewing it. World War I started in 1914, if that is the year that is indicated; there is Western influence evident on the facial features of all depicted (Byzantine icons would depict faces as "other worldly"); and the coloring in the second icon (not red over blue) of the Theotokos' garments is not consistent with traditional iconography, though Orthodox icons are not always completely true to traditional practice (so maybe it's Byzantine Rite, Roman Catholic). My guess is some kind of a WW I battle, Central Europe, Carpatho-Rus region.
