Holy Mountain Grabarka is situated near town of Siemiatycze in northeastern Poland. In XVIII century there was a man marvellously healed from cholera after he had put a cross on the top of the Mountain. Since then people have been carrying crosses and leaving them there, now there are  thousands of them. In 1947 there was female a monastery of St. Martha and St. Mary set up.

Annually on the feast of Transfiguration (by Julian) about a dozen of thousand pilgrims gather there. Many of them on foot, even from such remote places as Białystok and Warsaw (about 200 km). It's the most known and the biggest feast in Poland. There is also a copy of Icon of Theothokos from Iverion given by Athonite monks. On May there is also a gathering of Polish Orthodox Youth.

The place was visited by many primates of Churches and hierarchs:
- Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople
- blessed memory Patriarch Peter VII of Alexandria
- Patriarch Cyrill of Russia (as Metropolitan)
- Patriarch Teoktist of Romania
- blessed memory Archbishop Chrystodulos of Athens
- Metropolitan Herman of America

and Hierachs from Serbia, Ukraine, and Hungary

Here you've got a photoreport from 2003: http://cerkiew.pl/index.php?id=fotoreportaze&tx_ttnews[p_foto]=3&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=7733&tx_ttnews[backPid]=5&cHash=d4abcf9487

You have to paste the whole url.

Thanks Mike!

I'm a bit dizzy from moving my mouse too fast!   Wink

That was beautiful!

The church is lovely.  I've never seen so many icons depicting the betrayal of Christ, the judgment, the flogging, etc.

Grabarka is the biggest Orthodox sanctuary in Poland. Grabarka is for the Orthodox followers what Częstochowa sanctuary is for the Polish Catholics...

Nice!

I've never seen Orthodox pilgrims "crawling" that great distance.

One usually sees this in Latin American traditions.

Interesting.

Lots of people.
