I love this one:

I still don't think that what Christ had in mind when he told us to remove the plank from our own eye first was that we smack everyone else with it afterwards.

I really enjoyed this one:

My 78 year old momma is four feet, ten inches tall, very arthritic, has had a knee replacement and survived cancer.  But she would dropkick your bottom across the church parking lot if you used that language in front of her.  Watch your mouth.  Or in the case of this forum, your fingers.   Smiley

Your exclamation point to word ratio is reaching frightening proportions: 19 words and 7 exclamation points! Please, for the love of all that is good, tone it down, before it is too late! Wink

And here's one of my favorites:

Phew, I'm SO relieved old OC.net is back. I've been posting on a Protestant forum, filled mostly with hardcore Reformed Baptists, in the interrim. I'm worn out. I'm glad to be back in Babylon with my fellow Mary-worshipping cannibalistic pagans!

To bring up the topic:

My mother-in-law is convinced (among other things) that CFL bulbs are more dangerous than asbestos and this is all just some sort of ploy to get us to submit to the Anti-Christ (aka President Obama) or some other such nonsense.

I just smile and nod.

To bump this thread up:

It is really a shame you see no meaning to life without a God, and that without said God, self-indulgence would be such a likely side-effect.

Without God, life is void of any real meaning, significance, value, dignity, and worth.

Without transcendence one is left with nothing but pure naturalism.

In such a world nothing can really have true value and meaning.

In such a world, one is nothing more than a lifeless, meaningless, worthless, insignificant, and purposeless micro-machine of the Universe looking back at itself.

I don't agree for one second with what jnorm888 said in this quote, but I must admit that I really like the way that he said it.  Grin

A quote from Mina Soliman that I nominated for October Quote of the Month:

"This type of stuff happens often...but the side of the story is barely heard, let alone told."  I don't see these scientists get stoned for rejected the Ida ancestry hypothesis as you seem to put it.  They make a good case, it becomes heard.  If they had made a bad case, it would have become turd.

Being brought back to the thread from which this post contains, I remember this quote as being one of my favorites:

If I don't understand what my Mother is speaking to me, then how will I have a relationship with her?
But you didn't understand what your own mother was saying as she held you as a babe in her arms and nursed you and sang to you....Yet you still had a relationship with her....and gradually, you learned to speak your mothers language by listening to her and spending time with her and wanting to express yourself to her.

Ok, I will pray for forgiveness. In these times, when Yanukovich is selling the country to Russia and Communists are erected Stalin monuments, it is hard to remain faithful to Ukraine. But maybe, you can come back when Yulia Timoshenko will be president,  just like Saint Peter came back after the ressurection.

God bless Ukraine and the holy city of Kyiv. May all Saints of Pecherska Lavra be with you.

Ah yes, Tymoshenko. Fascist Barbie.

Awesome posts continue:
Also from Adherents, my favorite section: super-heroes grouped by faith.

Black Widow   Fireball   Confessor   Geo-Force   Elektra   Mindsinger   Terra

Unfortunately, we just got two anti-heroines (Elektra and Black Widow) who don't even mention this aspect of their origins and a couple of villains! Elektra even apostated to the ninja religion of the sect known as "The Hand".
Blame the Cold War, I suppose. Smiley

In case you may be wondering, the site claims that Superman's parents on Earth (Johnantan and Marta Kent) were Methodists and he was raised as such. Batman's parent were a mixed marriage between an Episcopalian and a Roman-Catholic and at least while his parents were alive we can suppose he was taken to church with them. Daredevil is Roman Catholic, and Spiderman seems to be a non-denominational Protestant.

Irish Hermit and elijahmaria,

I implore you, as the moderator of this sub-forum, to take a step back and spend a day in reflection on how both of you are presenting yourselves to this website and to the world at large.  This is obviously a very deep-seated argument you two are having with one another out in public.  Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, please take a moment to remember that your words here on the internet are forever and, thanks to the way humanity looks at people nowadays, will be indicative of both your reputations, for better or for worse.

This constant bickering between you two often goes past the issue being discussed.  Please put an end to it, at least in this thread.

Thank you.

Schultz.

Dear Christians
His Holynes metropolitan John Tomas of Scandinavia have made the resolution,
to Ban this Forum for all who belong to the Church of Christ.
These forums/debates undermines the authority of the Institution of the Church of Yeshua ben Yosef the Son of God and bring only questioning "in absurdum Maximus" both of the servants of God and the clean teachings of Christ, wich his Church must teach the faithful.

This forum have shown this not only when His Holynes tryed to reach faithful and ask for their prayers for the Metropolitat but all also over the forum.

This was the words of Our Holy Father,a disciple of christ

it seems that every man in my parish has either a beard or a very large mustache which the little kids mistake for some furry dead thing.  it seems like this is a trend in Orthodoxy.

my question is, is every Orthodox man obligated to wear a beard?  are we teenagers expected too?  I hate shaving, but I hate looking like a greasy werewolf every three weeks.

Those not able to grow a beard are required to buy and wear a fake one . At my parish, at least.
They sell those beards at some monasteries, made of the surplus facial hair of  monks, when they shear them, on the third week of Lent.

"you cannot bring a bear into Church"

I wonder if any Bishop has ever used economia to allow a bear into Church?  Perhaps an especially pius bear?  Maybe Whinnie the Pooh?  Perhaps Yogi Bear?  The Lord knows both of them could use the Church, what with their gluttony.

To be a member of either church you must accept the ENTIRE faith of said church which is explained in their doctrines and dogmas.  You can't just pick and choose what you want and be a legimate member of either church.  That is Protestantism.  And its certainly shows the illegmaticy of some of those who practice the Orthodox ritual and customs and claim they are one with Rome while not adhering to all the papal doctrines.

I accept the fact and agree that in order to be a member of either church you must accept the ENTIRE faith of said church and can't just pick and choose what I want.  But my understanding from Pope Pius X's "nec plus, nec minus, nec aliter" statement is that the doctrines and dogmas of the Catholic Church do not forbid me from living and practicing the daily life of a Russian Orthodox by attending the liturgy, venerating icons, and following the calendar and prayer life just as members of the Russian Orthodox do.  My guess is that the Russian Orthodox Church also does not forbid me from the doing so.  Or does it?

No, the Orthodox Church does not have a ban on live-action roleplaying... it's just kind of lame.

First law of forumdynamics: opinions can be neither modified nor completely changed during a discussion

Second law of forumdynamics: threads naturally tend to go from order (on topic) to disorder (off topic)

Third law of forumdynamics: as a thread progresses the substance of posts will decrease at the same rate that the number of posts increase

Fourth law of forumdynamics: when cornered in an argument, a person will invariably say that their opponent simply doesn't understand, and then they will vow to leave the discussion

Imagine if Met. Hilarion did allow himself to have been elected the Met. for the OCA, when he was asked to allow his name to be placed on the ballot.

I think Metropolitan Hilarion is probably already a serious contender to be Patriarch of Moscow after Patriarch Kirill... He currently holds the position +Kirill held, and is extremely active in relations with other Orthodox Churches, and also dialogue with non-Orthodox.
While it obviously wouldn't be official, I think of Metropolitan Hilarion as being "Patriarch in training", if you forgive my Star Wars lingo, he'd be the Jedi Knight who is preparing to become a Jedi Master.
(all due respect to his holiness Metropolitan Hilarion, I just got an idea to put his and Obi-Wan's images next to each other, but I'll keep it to myself, as I don't want to be disrespectful)

Now I fry my sausages in sunflower oil, and not lard as I would no in no-fasting seasons.

Horrifying.  These children might actually end up viewing church as an enjoyable place to be.  This must be stopped.

Mr Young, if you will pardon me, but my research over the years basically indicates that compared to Orthodoxy Protestantism is the ultimate non sequitur.
