Does anyone have a good, free, online source for the documents and canons of the Seven Ecumenical councils?

Also, what should I be concerned with? Canons, notes, etc.

For the canons, follow the links here:

I wouldn't go to much into the canons if I were you.

I don't know about being complete, but for the canons with some commentary (from an Orthodox point of view) there is always the documents at this site (though if you see the same thing I do, you'll have to highlight the writing to see what it actually says). For the canons, and commentary from a Protestant point of view, there is CCEL. Another source for both local and ecumenical Councils in the early Church is the Catholic website New Advent. It might also be a good idea to get a book on the subject, to help put the canons in context. A few of the ones published in English are:

- The Ecumenical Synods of the Orthodox Church: A Concise History, by Fr. James Thornton (written from a more traditional Orthodox perspective)

- The First Seven Ecumenical Councils (325-787): Their History and Theology, by Fr. Leo Donald Davis (writtern from a Roman Catholic perspective)

- The Church of the Ancient Councils: The Disciplinary Work of the First Four Ecumenical Councils, by Archbp. Peter L'Huillier (written from an Orthodox perspective)

EDIT--Well I see that I got beat to the punch with some of the links!

A sticky is something a mod or admin can use to keep a thread permanently at the top of a forum section. If you go to Faith Issues section, for example, you'll see threads at the top bolded and with a little thumb tack graphic by them.

Wow!  What a great thread.
What about "The Primary Chronicle"  by Nestor?  Is it online in translation or even in the original Church Slavonic?

By the way, are there any good sites or books which refute some secular critiques of conciliar history (such as, for example, the "fact" that dissidents were tortured and threatened into accepting the decrees of Nicaea?)   Or is there another approach to the apparent violence found in dogmatic history other than the approach that usual secular historians give us (that these things obviously happened and, furthermore they happened because Christians are vicious and violent thugs)?  Otherwise, I don't know how to respond to these attacks.

I'm afraid I don't know of anything like that, all I know about are general texts about the councils. This post can serve as a bump though and maybe someone else will know...

Yes, here are a few.

Note:  I have combed through this list to give hierarchs, clergy, and all sacerdotals their proper titles.
Do forgive in the event that I missed any.

I also previously had a couple of websites in this list characterized parenthetically in a way in which some might not approve.
I have attempted to eliminate any such thing from this list.
However, if any such characterization remains, then I sincerely apologize in advance request a moderator to delete such unnecessary wording retaining the link.  Thank you.

Saint Constantine the Roman Emperor did not compel people to become Christian.  He was much more lenient than Emperor Saint Justianian was later.

For what it is worth, D.G. Kousoulas wrote a decent book about Saint Constantine.

Fr. Asterios Gerostergios wrote a book which sets the record straight about Saint Justinian the Emperor including answers to Procopius's slanders of Queen Sophia.

Theodorus Lector (6th century) - Ecclesiastical History
Epiphanius-Cassiodorus (6th century) - Tripartite History

Does anyone know of a place where these (preferably in English) can be found online?
