Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill has urged Russians to have less fun and spend more of their free time in seclusion.

On July 11, Kirill said there was "more fun than needed" in the life of Russians...

I indeed was having too much fun while reading that.

I can't think of a possibly positive way of spinning "don't have fun"

I've never thought of the Russians as a people inclined to "having too much fun."

I remember Pope John Paul II, after the fall of communism, telling the people not to look to capitalism of the West as an answer.  so in a way what His Holiness is saying isn't much different.

Of course.  Considering how writers such as Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and other Russian writers are cracking jokes on every page they write, don't you think the Russians should try to get a little more serious? Wink

Some people joke about the Russian love of suffering, yet from my extensive research on sites containing adult content, it seems to me that Russian women do enjoy love when others suffer. Now, what is this? These women are having fun, perhaps too much fun, yet the men are decidedly not having fun. So what do?

Ridiculous journalism.  Is his speech translated more fully anywhere?  The whole sensational article was based only on his supposed use of the phrase "more fun than needed"?

According to the journalist, he was encouraging Russians to use their vacations to visit holy sites and monasteries, places of prayer, rather than blowing all of their time on pleasure.  This is a very good recommendation that we need to hear in this country from our own bishops as well.  We should take time out from our busy routines to find rest for our souls and not more indulgence for the flesh.  Vacations spent at monasteries and visiting holy sites are more likely to leave one truly refreshed in soul and body, whereas worldly and self-indulgent vacations often leave one more exhausted both spiritually and physically.

I am not a great fan of HH Kyrill. However, I think that he is being unfairly mocked and criticized. He was at Valaam and said something to promote pilgrimages to Valaam. He also made a good point in that vacations should indeed be occasions to relax and enjoy life.

Why, because he is trying to save his people? He is wanting the people to be more like Christ so they can enter the Kingdom. I see nothing wrong with that.
