Chasin' down a Hoodoo...

« on: June 29, 2013, 08:05:48 PM »

During the in-between time of when I left Islam but hadn't yet considered Christianity, I bought a little journal and wrote all of my favorite quotes on all different subjects and used to carry it around like a bible.  I've long since lost that journal but I still love quotes because they can capture big ideas succinctly.  In fact, there's a quote about 'quotes', if you will:

"Colours fade, temples crumble and empires fall, but wise words remain."  ~ Thorndike

So without further adieu, post your favorite quotes!

"But as though the mere length of my beard were not enough, my head is dishevelled besides, and I seldom have my hair cut or my nails, while my fingers are nearly always black from using a pen. And if you would like to learn something that is usually a secret, rny breast is shaggy, and covered with hair, like the breasts of lions who among wild beasts are monarchs like me, and I have never in my life made it smooth, so ill-conditioned and shabby am I, nor have I made any other part of my body smooth or soft. "I hate silence, when it is time to speak." (St Kassiane the Hymnographer)

At a lecture about Sophocles, which had a predominantly male audience, a female professor from the UK said: "Everyone here probably remembers Ajax' trite jingle 'Woman, silence graces women'. It has been quoted throughout the centuries to make women shut up. No one ever mentions that Ajax was already insane when he spoke those words"

Golf is a good walk wasted.  -Mark Twain

There are two kinds of people, Hypocrites and dead ones,  -Tony Sangster

How seldom we weigh our neighbors in the same balance as ourselves.  ~Thomas à Kempis

We are not hypocrites in our sleep.  ~William Hazlitt

Hypocrite reader - my fellow - my brother!  ~St Jerome

Most of us are aware of and pretend to detest the barefaced instances of that hypocrisy by which men deceive others, but few of us are upon our guard or see that more fatal hypocrisy by which we deceive and over-reach our own hearts.  ~Laurence Sterne, 1760

If there existed no external means for dimming their consciences, one-half of the men would at once shoot themselves, because to live contrary to one's reason is a most intolerable state, and all men of our time are in such a state.  ~Leo Tolstoy, The Kingdom of God Is Within You

Few love to hear the sins they love to act.  ~William Shakespeare

The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be.  ~Socrates

Just remember, there's a right way and a wrong way to do everything and the wrong way is to keep trying to make everybody else do it the right way.  ~M*A*S*H, Colonel Potter

not my favorite quote- as i don't have one- but a beautiful image of the cosmic space in poetry, an image I first came across with in high-school:

"Et tous ces filateurs et toutes ces fileuses
Mêlant et démêlant l’écheveau de leur course,
Et dans le sable d’or des vagues nébuleuses
Sept clous articulés découpaient la Grande Ourse.
"
