Saint John of Damascus is everywhere
« on: August 03, 2011, 11:35:08 AM »
Hey, all you folks with basically the same Saint John of Damascus icon as an avatar. Isa had it first.

It is really confusing when scrolling and I bump into Saint John of Damascus and I start reading a post and wonder where in the heck Isa is coming from, or wonder where the acerbic wit is, or the entire catalog of Rand McNally from the Garden of Eden to present in 33,346 x 24,764 pixels per map is.

Please at least change your avatar to another icon of Saint John of Damascus, if you just have to have him as your avatar. Or start being simultaneously incisive, decisive, derisive, divisive, and concisive (poetic license). Plus add a lot of maps I possibly cannot understand or have to scroll five minutes to see in their entirety.

Thanks.

//:=)

In honor of Isa here was his avatar (before a technical glitch took it from him), just the way he wishes he could have it displayed:

Ok, I just spit coffee all over my monitor & keyboard. You, sir, will be getting the bill!

Another two very popular avatars are the one with Seraphim and the Byzantine flag.

No matter how wrong it is, I tend to think that people look like their avatars. I will be very, very disappointed if Isa is not Saint John of Damascus.

I vote that whoever gets to pick orthonorm's avatar (from that contest) picks Saint John.  ;D

If this is true, I pity those who have St. Athanasius as theirs. He is one Saint who iconographers did a radical touch up on, or our bodies will be radically glorified beyond what we can imagine upon receiving them.

This is demonstrably false. Have you ever seen me using an avatar of Brad Pitt, with my shirt ripped open and my manly chest glistening in the sun? Exactly.

I often wonder if posters (like Poppy did at first) think I'm a woman because I use a Theotokos icon.

The sex of the person present in the icon does usually does condition what I think their sex is in RL for a moment or two.

O Ye, Fickle Posters!

What once began as a celebration of our beloved Isa has taken a turn of malice!

It is not that we loved Isa less, but that we loved lulz more.

If it makes you feel better, Isa, I think that your current avatar is cooler than your previous one, with the Arabic script and all:
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die [...] These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. St. John of Damascus is not only everywhere on this site, but he is also everywhere theologcially and philosophically. In the Summa Theologiae, Aquinas relies heavily on the work of St. John.
"For, by its immensity, the divine substance surpasses every form that our intellect reaches. Thus we are unable to apprehend it by knowing what it is. Yet we are able to have some knowledge of it by knowing what it is not." - St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa contra gentiles, I, 14.

I vote that whoever gets to pick orthonorm's avatar (from that contest) picks Saint John.  ;D

For the record, I am not St. Olaf of Norway.  But that does not mean that I am not an 11th Century Viking warlord.  Well...I wish I was.

I kind of wish I got to pick Orthonorm's avatar now.  I am still consternating about what he should do for a .sig.  But I am kind of leaning towards a certain Samson quote since it is probably the most un-PC thing in the entire Bible, and thus it makes me laugh.
