For those having issues setting their avatar, here is a simple guide. 1. Once you login, click Profile in the title bar. (Or click this link) 2. On the left, under the Modify Profile header, click Forum Profile Information. 3. It is the top section of this page that deals with avatars: - Personalized Pictures: Click the bullet next to this statement and then choose an avatar from the list if you wish to use one of the forum's stock avatars.
- I have my own pic: Click the bullet next to this statement and enter in the full URL (Web Address) to an image that can be found on the internet which you wish to use as your avatar.
- I will upload my own picture: Click the bullet next to this statement and then click the Choose File button to upload a small image stored on your computer as your avatar.
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Change Profile button to save the changes. Enjoy!

I would like to put a photo of myself for my avatar. I have a photo saved as a Word document and as a PDF file. What do I need to do in order to upload it for my avatar? Please be very specific and step by step. I am very computer illiterate.
Thank you.

To set an image as your avatar, first your have to save it as an image file. 1) Start with the Word document containing the image 2) Click on the image (that should highlight it) 3) Copy it (Control + C, or Edit, Copy) 4) Open Paint 5) Paste the image (Control + V, or Edit, Paste) 6) Save your photo, under "save as type", choose either PNG, JPG, or GIF. BMP should be the default, but the file size will be very large. 7) If you want to crop your image at all, use http://www.picresize.com/. It is really straightforward. 8) Follow 3. I will upload my own picture, from my first post.

I *had* an avatar, and had no trouble loading it before, and usually never have trouble with this sort of thing, but seeking to change it today, it wouldn't work. Here is a screen capture of my Profile, taken after having clicked >Change Profile; as you can see the image *seems* to have loaded. But once I navigate from the page the image is gone. If, alternatively, I click >Change Profile *again* the image and the link simply disappear. Advice? What is the maximum size of avatars set by the admins for the board? Do they auto-reset? I resized at imgur.com also (smaller, to 125 x 203 in case my image was too big per forum specs/?), but it still wouldn't "take" here. On my boards admins can also load an avatar from a url in the admin control panel. Could an admin perhaps give this a shot -unless there is some obvious advice? The URL is http://imgur.com/OaADt.png -you should be able to easily resize it if needed in the admin panel under >User >Avatar

Have you tried saving it to your computer, and using the upload option? The hot-linking glitches out now and then.
ETA: I just tried both hot-linking and uploading the image you provided, and it worked both times. So it was likely just a hiccup.

I had actually tried the upload option first, and then the URL, neither of which worked. The URL still doesn't work, but saving the smaller picture I had resized (125x203) *as* a URL, and using upload on the smaller version actually worked. There must be a glitch in the URL upload(?), as you suggest. Anyway, no worries now, and thanks for your reply
